In Nigeria, having a National Identification Number (NIN) is important for various official transactions and services. However, updating or modifying your NIN data may sometimes be necessary due to changes in personal information. Here's a simple guide on how to do it, along with common issues faced by Nigerians during the process.

Why You May Need To Update And Modify Your NIN Data

Your NIN serves as a unique identifier for all citizens and legal residents in Nigeria. It is good to ensure that your NIN data is accurate and up-to-date to avoid any complications in accessing services or conducting transactions that require NIN verification.

How to Modify Your NIN Data

1. Visit an NIN Enrollment Center: Locate the nearest National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) enrollment center in your area. Bring along the necessary documents, such as a valid ID card and proof of changes (e.g., marriage certificate for name change).

2. Fill Out the Modification Form: Request a modification form from the enrollment officer and fill it out accurately with the updated information.

3. Submit Supporting Documents: Provide the required supporting documents to validate the changes you wish to make. This may include documents proving change of name, address, or other personal details.

4. Biometric Verification: Undergo biometric verification to confirm your identity. This typically involves capturing your fingerprints and facial biometrics.

5. Confirmation and Update: Once the modifications are processed, you will receive a confirmation slip indicating the changes made to your NIN data.

Issues Faced by Nigerians and How to Overcome Them

1. Long Queues at Enrollment Centers

Many Nigerians often face long queues and wait times at NIMC enrollment centers. To minimize inconvenience, consider visiting during off-peak hours or utilizing alternative enrollment centers if available.

2. Documentation Challenges

Some individuals may encounter difficulties in obtaining the necessary supporting documents for NIN data modification. Ensure you have valid and acceptable documents to validate the requested changes.

3. Technical Glitches

Occasionally, technical issues may arise during the biometric verification process, causing delays. Patience is key in such situations, as enrollment officers work to resolve any technical glitches promptly.

How To Modifying Your NIN Data via the Mobile App

NIMC has introduced a mobile app to streamline the process of NIN data modification and other related services. Here's how to do it:

1. Download the NIMC Mobile App: Visit your device's app store and download the NIMC mobile app.

2. Register or Log In: Create an account or log in to your existing account on the app.

3. Select Modification Option: Navigate to the modification section within the app and choose the type of modification you need to make (e.g., name, address).

4. Follow On-Screen Instructions: Input the updated information as prompted and upload supporting documents as required.

5. Submit and Await Confirmation: Once you've completed the modification request, submit it through the app and await confirmation of the changes.

How To Modifying Your NIN Data via NIN Self-service Tool

You can now modify your data - name, phone number , date of birth and address via NIN self-service tool. I believe this is a good development.

The fee for this modification is 15,000k naira and you’ll be required to upload a letter of application eliciting reason for the change, your NIN original slip issued, supporting documents for the specific change and a remita retrieval reference.

You can read more on the website or download the app.

Major Issue

Doing it isn't really the problem, NIN server has always been a total fu[k up since it's creation. I've had a friend paid for modification and did recapturing more than 3 times and I've been monitoring the data since December 2023 and so far nothing has been changed.

It takes forever for NIN data modification to reflect, several other people have been complaining on their SM handles yet nothing has been done about it.
