Early Life and Education
Paul de Munnik was born in Dronten in 1970. As a child, he sang in his mother’s church choir and also played in a new-age band. He was a close friend of actor Kees Boot, and together they organized cultural evenings at their high school, Almere College.
Paul de Munnik later studied at the Kleinkunstacademie in Amsterdam. There, he met Thomas Acda, who was attending drama school in the same building. They graduated in 1993 with a joint theater project that won the Pisuisse Prize. After graduation, Paul de Munnik briefly worked as a teacher at the Cabaret Academy and also acted in TV series such as Pleidooi, Help, and Een Galerij. He also worked at the Netherlands Film Museum.
Career
In 1995, Paul de Munnik reunited with Thomas Acda to form the duo Acda en De Munnik. Their first theater show Zwerf’On was a success, and the songs were later released on CD. The duo became very popular in Dutch music and theater.
In 2007, Paul de Munnik worked with Kees Prins and JP den Tex on the program Op weg naar huis (On the Way Home). He also published a book of lyrics by Bram Vermeulen, one of his inspirations.
In 2010, Paul de Munnik performed Brellando with Fernando Lameirinhas and Riet Muylaert, celebrating songs of Jacques Brel. Later, in 2011/2012, he toured with Maarten van Roozendaal in Heimwee naar de hemel (Homesick for Heaven), performing songs of deceased artists.
In 2014, Acda en De Munnik announced their farewell. Their last shows were in 2015 at the Royal Theater Carré, where both received royal honors and the Andreas Medal from Amsterdam.
Paul de Munnik then began his solo career. In 2016, he toured small venues and released his solo album with Wouter Planteijdt.
In 2021, Paul de Munnik released the song Als ik je weer zie with Thomas Acda, Maan, and Typhoon. He also joined The Streamers, a group that gave free livestream concerts during the pandemic. Paul de Munnik later voiced a character in the audiobook Zachtop lachen.
In 2022, Paul de Munnik released Stap in met mij with MEAU.
In 2023, Acda en De Munnik reunited and started performing again.
